How many kinds of bird?

You will count different kinds of bird from one quiet place. A bird can leave and return, so noticing a different kind is not the same as counting every visit.

Grown-up needed: yes for selecting the location, materials and supervising each observation

What you need

The rule

Stay still. Let them come to you.

How to do it

  1. Ask a grown-up to choose a comfortable observation spot.
  2. Draw a space for each different-looking bird.
  3. Watch quietly for ten minutes without approaching the birds.
  4. Record a bird’s size, colour and movement.
  5. Compare a new sighting with the descriptions already written.
  6. Count distinct descriptions and mark any uncertain matches.

Why it works

Bird identification uses several clues together. Size, colours, beak shape and movement can help distinguish species, but lighting and distance can change how a bird appears. One species may also have different-looking males, females or young. Counting different kinds therefore needs more care than counting every bird arrival. Staying still reduces disturbance and gives you longer to inspect the same animal. An uncertain description is useful evidence, even when it does not become a confident name.

For grown-ups

A grown-up chooses a place away from roads and prevents leaning out of a window. Do not feed or chase birds for a closer view. Encourage descriptions before names, and let uncertainty remain visible. Ask at dinner: “Which two clues would you use to tell two similar birds apart?”

Questions parents ask

What if we do not see the expected result?

Record what actually happened, including missing sightings or changes in conditions. An observation does not need to match a hoped-for example. The listed time is an estimate and some activities need repeated visits.

Should we collect something to take home?

Follow the rule for this activity and leave living things undisturbed. A sketch and a few words are usually enough to keep the observation without removing anything from its place.

Must we show the record online?

No. Keep the record at home if you prefer. Any online sharing needs grown-up permission and the privacy line above.
