A pencil
Crayons or coloured pencils

The rule

Start with a scribble. Eyes closed.

How to do it

Sit at a clear table with the paper in front of you.
Close your eyes and make one brief scribble on the page.
Open your eyes before moving anything else.
Turn the paper to look for a possible creature shape.
Add eyes, a mouth or limbs with the pencil.
Colour a few chosen details and give the creature a fictional name.

Why it works

Your visual system looks for recognisable patterns in what you see. A pair of marks and another line can suggest a face, even when they began without that intention. The scribble leaves several possible outlines, and turning the page changes which one stands out. Added details guide another viewer towards the creature you chose. This is an exercise in interpretation and design, not evidence that every observer will see the same face in the original marks.
