Be an energy detective

You will notice things that appear to be using energy without a clear purpose. Appearances can mislead, so ask before deciding that a light, appliance or open door is unnecessary.

Grown-up needed: yes for supervising observation and checking local or factual guidance

What you need

The rule

Find what is switched on for no reason.

How to do it

  1. Ask a grown-up which rooms you may observe.
  2. List visible lights, screens and fans that are switched on.
  3. Ask what each device is currently doing.
  4. Mark only cases the grown-up confirms are unnecessary.
  5. Have the grown-up decide any switch changes.
  6. Discuss why a dripping tap is a separate water observation.

Why it works

An operating device transfers energy for a purpose, such as lighting a room or moving air. Some plugged-in devices also use small amounts while idle, but the amount depends on their design and state. A charger’s use cannot be inferred as one fixed value from its appearance. An open door may affect heating or cooling in some conditions, while a dripping tap wastes water rather than automatically proving electricity waste. Checking the purpose prevents an observation from becoming an unsupported conclusion.

For grown-ups

Observation only is the child’s role. A grown-up decides whether anything can be switched off, and no plugs, sockets, cables or controls are handled by the child. Do not inspect appliances closely or interfere with necessary equipment. Ask at dinner: “Which first impression changed after you asked what the device was doing?”

Questions parents ask

Does the original film rule still apply?

The rule is reproduced above exactly. Where handling, substances or local conditions make the filmed activity unsuitable, this page gives an observation or planning adaptation and says so. Do not claim that an adapted attempt completed a different physical action or proved a wider environmental result.

What should a parent check first?

Check the setting, the proposed materials and any local guidance named in the steps. Keep unknown waste, sharp items and private details out of the activity. Discuss uncertainty openly and leave an unconfirmed claim unresolved rather than making the child supply a confident answer.

Is online sharing required?

No. A conversation at home is enough. Any optional post follows the privacy and grown-up permission line above.
