Draw it without looking

You will draw while keeping your eyes on the object rather than the paper. Your lines may wander, so the challenge is observing edges without correcting the picture by sight.

What you need

Paper
A pencil
A simple household object such as a spoon

The rule

Eyes on the object. Never on the paper.

How to do it

Sit at a table with the paper and object in comfortable reach.
Place the pencil at a starting point on the paper.
Look at one edge of the object.
Move the pencil slowly while following that edge with your eyes.
Continue around the outline without checking the paper.
Look at the finished drawing only after putting down the pencil.

Why it works

Drawing normally combines seeing the object with seeing your marks. Here you remove the second source of visual feedback while leaving your observation of the object. Your hand must follow the intended movement without frequent position corrections from the page. That makes a wobbly result understandable rather than evidence of poor looking. Comparing the remembered outline with the final drawing can show which edges you attended to and where the hand’s position drifted.

Draw the same object more slowly.
Explain which outline details survived despite the position drift.
