Freeze dance

You will move while music plays and stop when it pauses. Listening and slowing your movement together can take more control than simply beginning to dance.

Grown-up needed: yes for checking the space and supervising movement

This page adds a grown-up, a clear nonslip space and a comfortable volume to what the film lists, so follow the page.

What you need

The rule

When the music stops, so do you.

How to do it

  1. Ask a grown-up to clear a comfortable movement space.
  2. Choose music at a volume that allows normal conversation.
  3. Begin small gentle dance movements.
  4. Ask your partner to pause the music at an unpredictable moment.
  5. Stop in a comfortable balanced position.
  6. Restart when the music resumes and swap the pausing role.

Why it works

Your ears provide a signal that the sound has stopped, and your nervous system uses that information to change your movement. Muscles can slow the body as well as start it moving. A large or fast movement may need more time and space to stop than a small gentle one. There is also a delay between noticing a signal and responding. The game explores coordination and attention without requiring an impossible instant stop or a risky frozen pose.

Make it harder

For grown-ups

Keep movements gentle, with no running, spins that cause dizziness or balancing on furniture. Let the child settle their feet rather than hold an uncomfortable pose. Music pauses are a game cue, not a test of obedience. Ask at dinner: “Which movement was easiest to stop safely, and what made it easier?”

Questions parents ask

Does the child need to reach the film’s target?

No. The film shows an example, not a required performance. Begin with a short comfortable attempt and stop whenever needed. The useful result is a description of what happened, and the stated time estimates preparation and discussion as well as the activity.

Can we adapt the movement?

Yes. Choose a comfortable version with a grown-up, or discuss the film instead of doing the action. Say clearly when the adaptation changes the stated challenge rule. Avoid making the activity faster, longer or less stable simply to make it harder.

Do we need to share a video?

No. Talking about the attempt at home is enough. Follow the privacy line above for any optional sharing.
