Shape hunt
You will search one room for six drawn shapes before the timer ends. A face of an object can match a shape even when the whole object is three-dimensional.

What you need
- Paper
- A pencil
- A timer
- A helper to select one room
The rule
Find every shape before the timer ends.
How to do it
- Draw a circle, square, triangle, rectangle, star and hexagon on paper.
- Ask someone to choose the room and a comfortable time limit.
- Start the timer.
- Look for an example of each shape without moving equipment.
- Tick a shape when you can describe the matching outline.
- Check the examples with the helper when time ends.
Why it works
A two-dimensional shape describes an outline or flat region. A cupboard door can have a rectangular face even though the cupboard is a three-dimensional object. A regular hexagon has six equal sides, while other six-sided shapes can be irregular. A square is also a kind of rectangle because it has four right angles. Explaining the feature you noticed is more precise than naming an object and assuming everyone sees the same shape in it.

- Look for an irregular six-sided outline.
- Explain why a square can count as a rectangle.

Before you start
Keep the hunt observational, away from cupboards, tools, sockets and climbing. A helper can ask which face or outline the learner means. This turns naming into a check of geometric properties. Ask at dinner: “Which example needed an explanation before someone else could see the shape you found?”
